The 5-Day Fasting Mimicking Diet Plan: How It Can Help

Last Updated on September 13, 2022 by Lori Geurin

Recently I had the opportunity to try the ProLon Fasting Mimicking Diet plan and wrote this post to share my experiences with you. Wondering if it’s healthy or if it could help you? Keep reading to find out more!

Intermittent fasting (IF) has become a popular health practice in recent years though it’s been around for ages. I’ve been an IF enthusiast for several years now, enjoying many of its impressive health benefits. As a health coach, I’ve met a lot of people who’re fasting for a variety of reasons.

There are different types of fasting including IF and time-restricted fasting. ProLon is a type of periodic fasting. Studies done on the ProLon eating plan have shown some amazing results, especially considering the plan only lasts 5 days.

In one study, the ProLon group lost belly fat and weight, without losing lean muscle mass.[*] They also saw improvements in cholesterol, blood pressure, stem cell production, and inflammation markers. These impressive results were only seen with the Prolon diet. No other fasts or even the Keto diet compared.

After reading all the compelling research about ProLon FMD I was excited to try the plan for myself.

This is a sponsored post. ProLon sent me a complimentary 5-day meal program to try and share my unbiased Prolon fasting review with you.

What Is The ProLon Fasting Mimicking Diet Plan?

The ProLon plan was created from years of research. Dr. Valter Longo, Ph.D., and director of the Longevity Institute of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles created the ProLon plan. The company is well-established and partners with MD Anderson and the Mayo Clinic, among other well-respected institutions.

ProLon gives you the benefits of fasting while allowing you to eat tasty food. The meals are plant-based and made from whole foods. They’re also gluten-free and non-GMO.

(Here’s more information about the whole foods diet.)

Because it’s a fasting plan the calorie restriction may sound a bit intense, but hey, it’s only for 5 days. The first day includes 1,100 calories, then days 2 through 5 provide 750 calories each.

Prolon Fasting Mimicking Diet Versus Intermittent Fasting

The main difference between the Prolon FMD and intermittent fasting is you can eat specific, nutritionally-balanced foods in the FMD whereas you don’t eat anything within your fasting window when you’re IF.

The FMD is designed to initiate the health benefits of intermittent fasting while at the same time allowing you to eat small amounts of high-quality fat, low-calorie foods.

I was happy to find an easy-to-follow eating plan guide enclosed in the ProLon box. As you can see below, it includes a simple chart that shows exactly what to eat for each meal and snack every day.

This made things fast and easy (just the way I like it) because I don’t enjoy spending a ton of time meal-prepping in the kitchen. And, I don’t know about you, but I’d rather be doing other things, like eating!

Fasting Mimicking Diet 5-Day Meals And Cost

My fasting mimicking diet meal plan order came with 5 days of meals, 3 meals per day, plus 2 snacks. The photos below show each day’s meals.

Since I’m used to eating mostly fresh, whole food (and everything in the meal kit is packaged) I was apprehensive about it tasting good. But, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and delicious taste of the food.

ProLon currently offers the choice of original or new soup flavors and I opted for the original. The flavors included:

  • Vegetable
  • Minestrone
  • Vegetable quinoa
  • Tomato
  • Mushroom

The soups were quick and easy to prepare. You simply mix them with water and either heat them in the microwave or on the stove, according to the directions.

The kit also includes:

  • Olives
  • Kale crackers
  • L-bars (choco-crisp and nut-based)
  • L-drink – you add this to the provided water bottle
  • Herbal tea – hibiscus and spearmint
  • Supplements

My favorite foods for the week included the tomato soup, kale crackers (yes, for real), olives, and the L-bars. All the ingredients were real food ingredients and I found this impressive. There was no junk to be found anywhere.

The total cost of a ProLon kit is $249. And here’s what you get…

Fasting Mimicking Diet Plan Results

Going into the plan I wasn’t sure what to expect since I’d never done a fast that involved consuming food before. But I was super excited to get started when I saw the gorgeous box and organized packages of food I’d be eating every day because it looked like a fun experiment!

The first day I read over the enclosed pamphlet to see exactly what I’d be eating. Then I signed up to get complimentary daily emails for helpful tips on how to get the most out of the ProLon kit.

Day 1

On day 1 I felt great, loved the food, and didn’t feel hungry at all. The only downside was that I didn’t sleep a wink that night.

Day 2

Day 2 was more challenging. With the big drop in calories, I felt a little hungry and started craving apples (maybe for the crunch?) and the no-bake energy balls I make nearly every week now. By that evening I used my keto testing strips and I was in ketosis.

Day 3

By day 3 my hunger had subsided because I was in deep ketosis. I was still craving the apples and peanut butter balls but didn’t feel truly hungry. I noticed as I was working on the blog that day that I was incredibly productive, my mind was sharp, and I felt a burst of energy. What an awesome feeling! It was a great reminder of the extraordinary power of fasting.

I knew at that point autophagy had kicked in and I was enjoying the impressive benefits of cellular recycling – getting rid of old, damaged cells to make room for new, healthy ones.

Days 4 & 5

On days 4 and 5 I had virtually no appetite and had to remind myself to eat a couple of times. Even though I wasn’t able to sleep at all for the entire 5 days, I was still able to stay active around the house working on the blog and felt focused and energized.

Yes, this part was extremely challenging. (This lack of sleep reminded me why I stopped doing the keto eating plan a couple of years ago – because when I’m in ketosis I can’t sleep.)

From days 3 to 5, I still had a sharp mental focus and unexplained energy despite being so sleep-deprived.

5-Day Fasting Mimicking Diet Plan: FMD Weight Loss

I lost 5.3 pounds which was a pleasant surprise because I didn’t go into this looking to lose weight.

When the meal program ended I followed ProLon’s suggestions and didn’t go immediately back to my normal diet. For a couple of days after the FMD, I ate liquid foods, light meals, mashed potatoes, and oats. Then I reintroduced small amounts of meat and vegetables into my diet and it worked well.
