It’s not easy to keep up with the demands of a pet. The average dog requires about an hour per day, and that doesn’t include the time you spend playing or training it. Cats can be low-maintenance, but some breeds need more attention than others do. And if you have multiple pets, making sure they all get enough exercise and affection can feel like a full-time job!

But don’t worry: there are plenty of easy pets out there for people who want something cute and cuddly without all the fuss. Here are five pets that are perfect for busy pet owners!

5 Low-Maintenance Pets for the Busy Pet Owner

1. Dogs

You may be thinking, “but don’t dogs require a lot of attention?”

Dogs do require time, effort, and care but when you consider all the benefits of owning a dog I think they’re definitely worth mentioning (I’m a little partial). They need to be walked and given attention. But because dogs love pleasing their owners, they’re often easy to train and make an excellent companion pet for adults who have a lot on their plate.

And if you’re lucky enough to live in a dog-friendly city, you can even take your pup for a walk at lunchtime!

2. Cats

A cat is an undemanding pet that requires little attention. A cat typically only needs to be fed, given water. Plus, they need their litter box cleaned out. If they have a lot of hair, you will need to brush them occasionally or purchase a hair removal product.

But cats are not hard to take care of. They don’t require constant attention and they like playing on their own.

They spend most of their time eating, sleeping, and exploring.

3. Hamsters

Hamsters are fairly easy to care for, plus they’re lots of fun. They don’t require much attention and don’t normally like to be held. Kids love them because they’re so cute and furry.

Hamster owners need to give their hamsters food and water. Also, make sure to keep their home clean because they like to play in their cage.

You’ll also want to take them out of the cage from time to time for exercise. Your hamster will love spending time with you as long as they’re not getting overwhelmed.

4. Goldfish

Goldfish are wonderful low-maintenance pets that don’t require a lot of attention or care beyond feeding them every day. This is great for busy people because they don’t require a lot of time or money.

They’re super very easy to take care of, making them ideal pets for busy people or newbies.

Goldfish are also interesting. They come in a wide variety of sizes, colors, and fin shapes and can range from 2 inches to over 20 inches long and 3 pounds! There’s a fish for every taste and preference.

5. Turtles

Turtles are great low-energy companions. They do not require as much upkeep or attention as some other pets.

They eat commercial pellets and veggies (carrots, lettuce, cucumbers, sweet potatoes). As with any pet, treat your turtle regularly with a reptile vitamin supplement to keep its immune system strong.
